The Maersk' Line's containership Safmarine Meru catches fire after it collided with a German-owned container vessel Northen Jasper some 120 nautical miles East of Ningbo.
A crew of 22 people were immediately evacuated from Safmarine Meru. The crews of both vessels are safe.
The collision occurred in the evening hours of May 7, 2016, while the 2006-built Safmarine Meru was en route from Qingdao to Ningbo in China, according to Maersk Line.
The Safmarine Meru has nominal capacity of 4,650 twenty-foot-equivalent units but reportedly carried only 400 loaded containers at the time of the collision. Northern Jasper operated by Germany’s Norddeutsche Reederei H. has capacity of about 8,400 TEUs.
Both ships are afloat and anchored while authorities begin investigations into the incident.
