MV Flinterstar sunk

Yesterday morning near the Belgian coast MV Flinterstar sunk. The crew is safe and doing well. The Flinterstar is stable, there is no emergency, reports vessel's Dutch owner Flinter.

The 2002-built, 8,850-dwt freighter Flinterstar collided with LNG tanker ‘Al Oraiq’  at approximately 04:00 hrs on October 6 with pilots on board,

K Line LNG Shipping (UK) Limited, as tanker's Managers, confirm that the Al Oraiq is safely discharging alongside the LNG Terminal in Zeebrugge.

The 210,000 cu m Q-Flex LNG tanker Al Oraiq is jointly owned by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Nakilat.


Thanks to their prompt and professional assistance personal injuries and further losses were avoided.

The LNG tanker was transporting a cargo of chilled gas from Qatar’s Ras Laffan port for unloading at Zeebrugge terminal. The damaged cargo ship was enroute from Antwerp to Bilbao with a cargo of steel plate and crane building equipment.

The cause of the accident is not yet determined and an investigation will be launched.
